2017 Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin Projects of Distinction–Silver Award
The Employer Group’s goal for its new headquarters was to create an attention-grabbing building with a modern aesthetic. Mission accomplished!
The design features a straight roofline, with a curving glass wall underneath that opens to the southwest—the best view from the site. The interior layout incorporates curves to echo the curving glass wall, and a second-floor bar area utilizes the exterior glass wall and its view as a backdrop for gatherings. Exterior materials selected to complete the clean, modern aesthetic include architectural metal panel, stone and glass.
Structurally, MP-Squared designed the two-story building to support both the architectural form and long-term performance requirements.
The floor system consists of concrete-filled metal deck spanning to steel joists, which are supported by steel girders and wide-flange columns. The roof utilizes metal deck on steel joists and girders, with structural loads directed to a primary steel column grid. A notable feature of the roof framing is an 87-ft. joist girder spanning along the front elevation, which establishes the building’s distinctive roof geometry.
Lateral force resistance is provided through a combination of CMU shear walls, steel moment frames and a large, exposed steel chevron brace. These components work together to deliver stiffness and stability under wind and seismic loading. Additionally, the chevron brace serves as an architectural accent visible from the roadway.
