TOTAL SQUARE FEET: (SIX SCHOOLS): 975,000

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), one of the nation’s largest school districts, required six new modern schools to be delivered on an aggressive schedule, within a constrained budget. MP-Squared Structural Engineers was retained to provide structural design for all above-grade structural framing for each facility.

The design approach utilized a true hybrid system, blending conventional structural steel framing with pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) frames and components. This strategy resulted in highly efficient, cost-effective structures, while also enabling single-source steel procurement. MP-Squared played a key role in the program’s success through close collaboration with the architect and construction manager, providing practical, insight-driven solutions throughout design and construction.

The completed schools—Hyattsville Middle School, Colin L. Powell Academy, Drew-Freeman Middle School, Kenmoor Middle School, Sonia Sotomayor Middle School and Walker Mill Middle School—are now landmark facilities within their communities and serve as case studies of efficient structural design, innovation and teamwork.
