PGCPS: Prototype Schools – Prince George’s County, Maryland

SERVICE: Structural Steel Engineer of Record
CONSTRUCTION COST: Part of the $485 Million PGCPS Project (Prototypes = 4 of 6 schools)
SQUARE FEET (each Prototype): 144,000

Four of the new Prince George’s County Public Schools—Drew-Freeman, Kenmoor, Sonia Sotomayor and Walker Mill—were developed as 144,000-sf. “prototype” facilities. Each school shares a common design and layout, with mirrored orientations along the long or short building axis to provide visual distinction, while maintaining programmatic consistency.

The prototype schools utilize a carefully integrated combination of conventional structural steel framing and PEMB systems. Conventional steel framing was employed for the primary educational wings, atrium spaces, connector bridges and entry and dining areas, allowing for architectural openness and vertical articulation. Pre-engineered framing systems were used for the gymnasium and multi-purpose spaces to efficiently achieve long spans and open interiors.

This hybrid structural approach supported the architect’s vision while significantly reducing overall construction cost and schedule risk. Prominent architectural canopies at the main entrances reinforce identity and create a strong sense of arrival for each campus.
